Veterans Day: Honoring all who serve

MOM_Web_Graphic.jpg

Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11, the same day that World War I ended in 1918. It was originally established as a way to honor the Americans who had served in that war. Today, the holiday serves to honor veterans of all wars who have displayed patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice for this country. To recognize and celebrate these brave men and women, there will be plenty of events around the country, especially right here in the nation’s capital. We’re proud to say that our nation’s first responders are among the honorees.

While D.C. does not host a Veterans Day parade, there are plenty of other events going on throughout the day. One such event is held at the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, which will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. at Constitution Avenue and Henry Bacon Drive in Northwest. Vietnam-era veterans and the children of veterans tell stories “in their own voices” about their experiences. There will also be stories featuring soldiers of the current struggles in Iraq and Afghanistan and other locations around the world. A Women in Military Service for America Memorial event will take place at 3 p.m. at the Gateway to Arlington National Cemetery. It’s free and open to the public and you’ll be able to witness formal military honors, a keynote address, veterans’ remarks and a wreath-laying.

Music will be a part of the day, as Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens in Virginia will be hosting a patriotic community concert by an all-veteran barbershop chorus at 11 a.m. At 2 p.m., a wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of George Washington, our first commander-in-chief, will take place.

If Veterans Day is simply not complete without brass bands and bunting, check out the Manassas Veterans Day Parade in Virginia on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. You’ll be able to see military and high school bands, pipe and drum corps teams, military units from the various Armed Services, military vehicles and members from local veteran organizations.

There’s much more to see and do, and you can find it all here.
