2016 Fairfax County real estate assessments; Dr. Seuss’ birthday party + more

Fairfax County logoMore than 350,000 updated real estate assessments for 2016 are now available online (and they are being mailed to all property owners). Approximately 55 percent of residential property in the county increased in value over the past year due to equalization, with an average increase of 1.64 percent. Non-residential real estate values (such as commercial) increased 2.87 percent on average due to equalization.

Of the 353,736 taxable parcels in Fairfax County:

  • 241,684 have an assessment change
  • 112,052 have no assessment change

Here’s the breakdown of average home property assessments (averages are not necessarily indicative of individual properties/neighborhoods):

  • Countywide average for all homes – $527,648
  • Single family-detached homes – $632,507, up 1.69 percent
  • Townhouse/duplex properties – $392,951, up 2.05 percent
  • Condominiums – $261,792, up 0.73 percent

For Reston, properties increased in value by 1.03 percent.

RSVPs are due today if you want to attend the birthday celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Walker Nature Center (11450 Glade Drive). Dr. Seuss has been teaching valuable lessons for generations such as “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” Steer your shoes to the nature center for a fun afternoon of crafts, food and birthday party fun in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ 112th birthday. The Rotary Club of Reston will host its major fundraising event, “Galactic Gala,” from 6 to 10 p.m. March 4 at Hidden Creek Country Club (1711 Clubhouse Road) to support Reston schools and Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio. The event will be Star Wars themed and feature the Reston Community Orchestra, trivia games, costume prizes and more. Tickets start at $85/person. Click here for more information.

Fairfax High School will host the 4th annual Grow Your Health: Gardening, Local Food and Wellness Festival 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. March 5, 2016. The cost to attend is $10/adults, free/ages 15 and younger.

The Reston Community Players presents “Mary Poppins,” through March 12. Tickets are $25/adults, $21/students and seniors.

Finally: The Adventure Cycling AssociationReston Association and the Reston Bike Club will hold a gathering for cycling enthusiasts from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Reston Association (12001 Sunrise Valley Drive). Information about Adventure Cycling’s 40th anniversary events, national advocacy projects, bike tours and membership will be provided. Reston is the only designated Bicycle Friendly Community in Fairfax County and home to more than 100 miles of paved and natural trails.
